In 2018, we learned the blessings and trials that come with bold dreams to explore new roads. The Joyful Project hosted its 4th Annual Concert for Socks, and for the first time it was expanded to a multi-city tour with shows in Downtown Toronto, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Montreal.
Toronto’s concert was held at the Rivoli on December 6 with performances by local spoken word poet Britta B, as well as incredible musical sets from Jane’s Party, Skye Wallace, and Paper Shakers. (Sidebar – be sure to check them all out on iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, or in an actual real life record store! I mean, I’m sure you can figure that part out on your own. The point is, they’re incredible and it’s the next best thing to attending a concert in person like all the cool kids and great decision makers who came to Concert for Socks.)
Socks remain one of the least donated and yet most requested items at shelters across Canada. We recognize the practical need for material and financial donations as we learn about and fight together against poverty. We share many things in common with our neighbours, including a need for socks and that universal happy heart-beat response to great music.
The proceeds of the Toronto show, along with the 1,000+ socks collected, went to Youth Without Shelter (YWS) - an emergency residence and referral agency serving homeless youth (ages 16-24) in Toronto. YWS provide diverse, client focused services in a safe, non-judgmental environment. (Sidebar II – there are all kinds of great ways that you can continue helping and serving alongside YWS, take a look!)
THANK YOU to all the volunteers who poured countless hours into planning and organizing this event. We are humbled by the generosity of the people who bought tickets, made donations, and brought socks to the concert. And we remain inspired by the performers who brought the arts to life as a meaningful way to raise awareness of the issues affecting youth who are homeless in our city. It is an unbelievable privilege to work together on this journey to keep hope alive and address the needs in our community with love and dignity.
We’re so excited for 2019 and all that lies ahead!
